I know, everyone loves compliments whether it’s about their hair, style and even to how good they smell, you can’t deny that it’s a real ego boost. What I struggle with is how to react after someone pays you a compliment? Most people say thanks and give a compliment back, a standard procedure, however a part of me dies inside and I feel my face heating up like a slow cooker.
Instead of being courteous and thankful like the good British etiquette, I half smile and justify why I should get that compliment.
Why do we need to justify compliments? When someone says “oh I really like your top,” why do I feel the need to say “yeah I only got it because it was on sale, I don’t really like it.” Why not, YEAH I GOT IT BECAUSE I LOOK SO DAM HOT IN IT! Obviously not to that extent, you don’t want to blow your own trumpet too much, but you catch my drift.
I guess it depends on what kind of person you are, I’m definitely the person that would like others to admire from afar rather than put me through that humiliation and torture of complimenting confrontation.
It ends in me looking to the floor and coming across like a socially awkward potatoe.
I apologise in advance and thank you in advance for any, if any, compliments that may cross my path.
Lots of love,
